3D Printing Potential for Construction Methods

Three architects who studied at the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) have come up with a game-changing construction method – using a robotic 3d printer to create tiny structures out of soil.

The Stone Spray Project was a thesis study that focused on the challenges of building in drylands and desert areas where construction materials are harder to get hold of. The technique uses soil or sand combined with a binder, to strengthen it – the mix is then jet sprayed into a 3d form. The technique has been used by the architects to create a small wall and furniture, which shows there is real potential for the technology to be translated in some form by the construction industry in future.
